Chapter one

The $50 date

I turned up to our first date with $50 and a lot of confidence. Before Salwa, I had never been to a café, or to Parramatta, and I considered Oporto boujee food. In my head, $50 was going to cover our two meals, dessert and my Opal fare to Parramatta and back. I realised I was in trouble when $10 of it went on the Opal fare just to get to her, so the real budget was $40 for two meals and dessert.

Long story short, it was not. We shared one dessert, one soft drink, free table water and a nice walk in the park. I called it romantic. Then we said goodbye, I counted what was left, and it was not enough to get me home, so I hopped the train gates.

She still agreed to a second date.

Chapter two

The years in between

Over the years we have been to birthdays, weddings, random side missions and far too many late nights. Somewhere along the way my budget got better, we still share that one dessert, and I realised every one of these moments was better with her in it.

Chapter three

The question

After all of it, there is one question left to ask. I have known I wanted to ask it since that first shared dessert. This time, I have budgeted properly.
